Heart Health, a priority for the Millers

The cold and blustery days of winter are not enough to keep Doreen and Sidney Miller from the Cummings Centre where a state-of-the-art Workout Studio awaits them. It was only after their children convinced them about doing more exercise that the 50+ couple decided to take up the challenge. The Miller’s previously walked to keep fit but now staying healthy and doing so as a couple became even more of a priority.

A recent study in Prevention Magazine has confirmed what the Milers are experiencing by finding that 94% of couples stick to their workout plan when they do it together. By motivating and encouraging each other, the findings indicate that individuals will not only feel more positive about their workouts but can also benefit their relationship. The report suggests that it can even be exciting for couples to explore new fitness activities, like biking or hiking, together.

Doreen was first to initiate a call to the Cummings Wellness Centre to get a fitness evaluation. A tailor-made program was put together and Doreen’s husband Sydney followed suit.

“Our day starts off here at the Wellness Centre,” notes Sydney. “We come in early and it is part of our routine now. Although we each have our own fitness program to follow, we often find ourselves ‘neighbours’ on the treadmill. As a couple, we encourage each other and it is highly motivating. After our workout, we usually head to Café Shalom at the Cummings Centre for a coffee and a bagel. This is our date day.”

The Millers note the advantage of working out in a community centre such as Cummings, where socializing is an added benefit. “We see couples that come to exercise have even developed friendships,” said Doreen.

With physical exercise well underway, the Millers already note some of the health benefits of feeling better. Not only have they persevered with heart-healthy exercise and regular workouts but agree that by doing so as a couple is highly motivating.

The Cummings Centre, a non-profit community centre of excellence for the 50+ community, welcomes people of all backgrounds and perspectives.  The Centre touches the lives of 10,000 people on an annual basis through its main campus and its off-site locations.
