February is Heart Health Month

February is Heart Health Month and although it is widely associated with Valentine’s Day, it is also a time to bring attention to the importance of cardiovascular health. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada the benefits of regular physical activity can be associated with better health.

Linda Barnabe, 73, knows all about the benefits of exercise and has kept up an active lifestyle that she calls ‘a lifelong passion.’ She recently joined the Cummings Centre and can be seen working out several times a week in the Centre’s Workout Studio. Following an initial fitness assessment with a staff kinesiologist, she received a personalized program that includes cardio strengthening and muscle toning exercises.

“I feel very supported here and everyone is especially friendly,” said Linda, who acknowledges the guidance she receives and the friendships that she has developed with other participants. “I have noted improvements in my posture and balance and I even have a more positive outlook on life. I feel re-energized after a workout.”

“It is an environment that totally encompasses my feeling of belonging,” added Linda. “It is very easy to relate to other members who are here for similar situations to mine. An all-around positive venue to participate in and know you are not alone in wanting to feel better.”
