DESCRIPTION
This course continues a chronological survey of the Beatles and their musical evolution. We will explore the mind expansion of the middle period with Rubber Soul and Revolver, the studio explorations of later recordings with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the “white album,” and Abbey Road, and finally the solo careers and the Beatles’ continuing legacy. You will hear Day Tripper, Paperback Writer, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Let It Be, Hey Jude, and Imagine, and other songs. Their songwriting, the impact of their sojourn in India, and connections with Ravi Shankar, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Donovan, Billy Preston, and Eric Clapton will also be discussed.
INSTRUCTOR
CRAIG MORRISON
Craig Morrison, Ph.D., is an ethnomusicologist who teaches courses on popular music and it roots at Concordia University and lectures for various institutions including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. He is the author of two books and numerous articles on music. As a bandleader and musician-on vocals, guitars, and keyboards-Morrison has produced 11 CDs. His band Vintage Wine performs regularly, and his Annual Roots of Rock and Roll Concert at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, each year with a different theme and with as many as 16 musicians and singers on stage, has been presented 20 times to date.
