AARON DERFEL
Aaron Derfel has been an investigative journalist for more than 30 years. In 2021, he won a Canadian Association of Journalists Award for his reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec and the Grand Prize of the Prix Judith-Jasmin, Quebec’s highest journalism accolade, for his investigation of the Résidence Herron nursing home tragedy. He has been honoured for writing about how budget cuts led to an increase in violence at the Montreal General Hospital in 2018, and in 2009, for a feature on the over-prescription of anti-depressants.
Aaron is a graduate of the Journalism Program at Concordia, where he has been teaching part-time since 2001. His non-fiction narrative of the trauma response to the 2006 Dawson college mass shooting was selected for the book, “The Bigger Picture: Elements of Feature Writing”. He has taken part in numerous panel discussions on public health policy.
