The History of Shoes: 10,000 Years of Fashion and Function

Presented by the Travel Club Committee

Since early civilization, shoes have not only protected our tootsies, but also acted as walking billboards (Greek sandals), signs of beauty (bound feet in China) and indicators of importance (the higher the heel, the wealthier the wearer).

On this virtual exploration, we will examine the craftsmanship of shoe construction from the Baroque, Renaissance and Victorian eras, up until today, marveling at brilliant shoe engineering techniques and clever uses of raw materials and see some wild and whimsical designs out there.

Our journey will include a discussion around the future of shoes and the pivotal role technology will play and will be followed by a Q & A session with our guide, Deborah. So, lace up, and come stroll through the centuries with us!
