Jews and Hockey

Jews have often been referred to as the “People of the Book”, so the rough and tumble game of hockey seems like the furthest thing from possible. Authors have popularized our faith's involvement with baseball, basketball, and boxing, but the contribution and involvement of Jews in professional hockey has not received the same scrutiny.

Join educator and author Irv Osterer as he takes you on a lightning three period visual survey of Jewish hockey from the sport’s inception to the present day. And if the score is not settled in regulation, there may be overtime!

Irv Osterer is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. He also holds a BFA from the University of Ottawa, a B.Ed from Queens University, and an M.Ed in Educational Administration from the University of Ottawa.

Irv is a member of the Society of Israel Philatelists and the 2021 recipient of their Reggel Memorial Award for Outstanding Service and Contribution to Holy Land and Israel Philately. He is an affiliate of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Canada and is a past contributing Editor to Arts and Activities Magazine in San Diego. He is the recipient of the National Capital Educators' Award, the Marjorie Loughrey Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, and a Director’s Citation from the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. Irv retired in 2020 after forty years as a secondary school fine arts administrator and teacher of applied design and visual art.

He lives in Ottawa with his wife. They have four sons, four daughters-in-law, two grandsons and a granddaughter. Until 2020, Irv was a game right winger in the Barrhaven Men’s Hockey Hockey.
