Jewish Transylvania

Our virtual journey takes us to 900-year-old Arad, a city located in western Transylvania, Romania, at the crossroads of East and West; a city shaped by the multiculturalism of many, including Romanians, Hungarians, and Germans. More than 10,000 Jews lived there before World War II, developing the city’s industry and culture. But by 2000, the number had dwindled to about 380. We will explore the sites in the old city where the Jewish Community began in 1717, particularly the interior of the Synagogue that housed the congregation of Neolog Judaism, the Reform Movement in Hungary, and hear about the prominent Reform pioneer, Rabbi Aron Chorin.
