Cooking for Mental Health

Mental Health Week, May 5-11 is a Canadian tradition, that aims to raise awareness about mental health and well-being, reduce stigma, and promote access to resources. The theme for 2025 is “Healing with Compassion”.

The Cummings Centre offers specialized groups for older adults who live with a mental illness to break isolation and enhance their quality of life by promoting community engagement, psychosocial support, and offering tailored intervention plans.

  • Creative arts therapies
  • Cooking group
  • Jewish holiday celebrations
  • Pet therapy
  • Socialization groups (coffee and chat, journaling)

“In the cooking class, we are all in the same boat. It’s a nourishing, caring and relaxed environment where we focus on the cooking and not mental illness.

Steve, the Chef, gives us recipes, is patient and guides us through cooking a delicious kosher meal from start to finish”.

Some of us chop, some of us cook, some of us clean. It’s a collaborative group effort. Being with others and participating in activities is so uplifting for me.
