WINTER WALKING
Winter can be a challenging time of the year to get out and about. Icy surfaces, slush and piles of snow can make walking hazardous.
Here are a few tips:
- Wear a good pair of boots (non-slip rubber tread, wide low heels)
- Use ski poles to help with balance
- Attach a retractable ice pick to your cane
- Slow down and look where you place your foot
- Bend your knees – lower your centre of gravity
- Keep feet wide as you walk
- Place whole foot down at once
- You may drag your feet or shuffle them
Making sure you get enough exercise is important.Walking indoors such as on a treadmill in the Cummings Workout Studio or joining our Snowshoe & Cross-country ski club can help you stay fit.
