WINTER WALKING

WINTER WALKING - FIT TIPS FOR ADULTS 50+

Winter can be a challenging time of the year to get out and about.  Icy surfaces, slush and piles of snow can make walking hazardous.

Here are a few tips:

  • Wear a good pair of boots (non-slip rubber tread, wide low heels)
  • Use ski poles to help with balance
  • Attach a retractable ice pick to your cane
  • Slow down and look where you place your foot
  • Bend your knees  – lower your centre of gravity
  • Keep feet wide as you walk
  • Place whole foot down at once
  • You may drag your feet or shuffle them

Making sure you get enough exercise is important.Walking indoors such as on a treadmill in the Cummings Workout Studio or joining our Snowshoe & Cross-country ski club can help you stay fit.
